Taking engagement photos is a fun day for couples. You are relaxed and get to show some personality in these candid moments. This is a great time to celebrate your love and the beginning of the wedding planning process.
As we talk about engagement photos, let’s check out a session by Sydney Morris Photography. Sydney is a local East Tennessee photographer and captured Madison and Derrick’s love last summer.
Many couples wear 2-3 outfits during their engagement sessions. You first of all want to wear clothes that look like “you” in which you feel comfortable. When coordinating with your future spouse, photographers recommend that you keep the patterns simple. Don’t perfectly match but wear colors that are complementary. Solids are often a safe bet. Neutral tones will age nicely when you look back at the photos decades from now.
At least one accessory is always good as well. A scarf, handbag, or larger necklace will allow you to style the photos slightly different and add interest. It’s okay to go a bit trendy but again, think about how the photos will age.
It’s always nice to have a place to change clothes during engagement sessions. At The Carriage House, our brides are welcome to use the Bride’s Room during their engagement session. This will give you ample space and a mirror to refresh your hair or makeup as needed.
Some couples like to extend their engagement photos to include their fur baby. Maybe they adopted a dog together and this dog has been a part of their lives. One of my friends used their dog in their engagement. The husband had always joked that he would ask his bride to marry him when his dog approved. The day of the engagement, the dog wore a new tag that said “I approve” and, of course, she said “yes!”
If you are getting married at The Carriage House, we offer the use of our grounds complimentary for the use of your engagement photos. This is a great opportunity to have some outdoor photos. Each season is beautiful here in our hollow. Our owner, Walt, plants flowers that bloom throughout the summer and the falls here are simply magical with the beautiful orange, yellow, and red trees.
Our estate is closed to the public which means the two of you and your photographer will be the only people on the grounds. Your session will feel very intimate. If you haven’t booked your wedding with us but would like to use our grounds for a photo session, please reach out. We are happy to discuss rates.
Photographers love the “golden hour” which is an hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. The light is warm and gentle during these hours. You’ll love the natural light during these hours.
Many couples use their engagement photos on their save the date or wedding website. These casual photos make those communications very personable. They are also very nice to have at the rehearsal dinner or in a guestbook on your big day. Don’t forget to have these photos made into an album. You will treasure these photos. Several of my friends treasure their engagement photos as much or even more than their wedding photos as their engagement session truly captured “them”.
If you need to book your engagement session (or even your wedding), please reach out to me at The Carriage House. I’d love to help you select a date where you can have private use of our estate.
All my best,
